Small class size (6 people max), outdoors, with physical distancing. We will experience fresh leaf dyeing on silk in addition to how to build a fructose vat. Mask wearing required.
Intro to ECO Printing & Dyeing
Discover plant materials cultivated, gathered from the wild, and remnants from the farmers market/produce aisle that create color as we experiment with printing/dyeing on silk. This 3 hour class will give you a chance to dip your toe in the water of this process. Think in terms of muted earthy tones in a range of colors – experiment with pattern made by leaves and basic bundling techniques. Leave the class with a dyed scarf and sample dyed silk swatches to use for reference when you experiment on your own. (A day long version of this class is also available).
Community Dye Days
Pop up community events where Debra brings natural dye vats to different locations and invites community members to try dyeing a bandana or other small item in the dye vat, using the natural dye of the day or indigo.
The Spirit of Paper
This process oriented workshop will take you from fiber to paper, taking you through the steps involved in the process of creating a sheet of handmade paper. We will learn about and experience a few of the myriad of fiber choices and the beating process and how it merges with our intentions for our paper. We’ll learn sheet forming, combined with technique and the spontaneity of the happy accident, will yield something beautiful. Expect to experiment, be inspired and to take something home with you. For all levels of experience. 5 hour class
Intro to Western Hand Papermaking
Learn the basics of the fine art of hand papermaking in this class. Paper artist Debra Ketchum Jircik walks students through a brief history and the process of making paper by hand. Learn the basics of how to prepare pulp and fibers, pull a sheet, couching, and drying to create a sheet of paper using Western sheet forming techniques. Students will know everything they need to begin making paper on their own at home. Course participants will leave with several sheets of their own handmade paper. 3 hour class
